Do you need to look at both eyes?

To put it bluntly, no.

Think back to when others have made eye contact with you. How aware were you of which eye the other person was looking into?

Chances are, unless you were hyper focused on the eye contact (never an ideal state), then you didn’t notice. Most people are like this. It’s possible to hold a three hour conversation looking only in one eye and have nothing seem odd about the eye contact.

However, this question reveals a deeper insecurity regarding eye contact that should be addressed.

If you are questioning your ability to make eye contact, thinking about your performance, or just generally unsure about what is considered normal eye contact then chances are you do have a problem.

For those who are confident with this skill, eye contact doesn’t take any extra processing power. It’s a social skill that, in its ideal state, should be made effortless and automatic.

How do you get it there?

Practice. Sometimes all you need is more information about what’s considered “normal” and then some extra effort to practice this behaviour until its automated.

Easy Eye Contact offers a three week audio course for instant download for those looking for more guidance. It guides you through eye contact exercises to increase confidence and make eye contact effortless.
